How to Layer Skincare Products the Right Way

You've invested in great skincare products, but are you using them in the right order? The sequence of your routine can make or break your results.
The Golden Rule: Thin to Thick
The most important principle of layering is applying products from **thinnest to thickest consistency**. This ensures:
- Lighter products absorb first
- Heavier products don't block lighter ones
- Maximum penetration of active ingredients
The Complete Layering Order
1. **Cleanser**
2. **Toner/Essence**
3. **Serums** (thinnest first if multiple)
4. **Eye cream**
5. **Moisturizer**
6. **Face oil** (yes, after moisturizer!)
7. **Sunscreen** (AM only)
Think of it like getting dressed: you wouldn't put your coat on before your shirt.
Wait Times Between Products
Should you wait between layers?
- **Toner → Serum**: Apply while skin is still slightly damp
- **Serum → Moisturizer**: Wait 30-60 seconds for absorption
- **Moisturizer → Sunscreen**: Wait 1-2 minutes
- **Active treatments (retinol, acids)**: Wait 20-30 minutes on dry skin
Special Considerations
**Water-based vs. Oil-based serums**:
If using both, water-based goes first.
**Multiple serums**:
Apply from thinnest to thickest. Or apply in separate routines (one AM, one PM).
**Face oil placement**:
Contrary to popular belief, oil goes AFTER moisturizer. Oils are occlusives—they lock everything in.
**Sunscreen**:
Always last in your morning routine. Wait 2-3 minutes before makeup.
Layering Don'ts
❌ **Don't mix certain ingredients**:
- Vitamin C + Retinol (use at different times)
- AHAs/BHAs + Retinol (alternate nights)
- Multiple exfoliating acids (overkill)
❌ **Don't use too many products**:
More isn't always better. Start with essentials and add slowly.
❌ **Don't apply heavy creams on damp skin**:
Watery products absorb better on damp skin; creams don't.
Signs You're Layering Wrong
- Products pilling or balling up
- Breakouts after starting new products
- Skin feeling congested
- Active ingredients not seeming to work
If you experience these, review your order and consider simplifying your routine.
